Independence Day

On this 249th anniversary of independence, the United States of America is in crisis. Our country is under assault: not from abroad but from its own government.

Donald Trump and his Republican party are moving at breakneck speed to eliminate vital social services, to increase wealth disparity, to accelerate environmental degradation, to diminish America’s international standing, to undermine democratic institutions, to suppress dissent, and to violate civil liberties and human dignity.

The President has flagrant contempt for the United States Constitution and the rule of law. That fact transcends our party differences and policy disagreements: it is fundamentally and deeply un-American.

It may be hard to feel proud of the United States this July 4th. But we can still celebrate this country’s higher ideals and its potential. Because America can do better, and America deserves better.

If, like me, you care about this country and its people, our responsibility is clear. Reject, oppose and resist this anti-American administration. It is the patriotic duty of us all.
