Independence Day, 2026

Two hundred and fifty years ago, the United States declared its independence and committed itself to the ideals of liberty, democracy and justice.

From that day to this, America has fallen short of those lofty ideals more often than it has lived up to them. Over the past quarter-millennium the United States has perpetrated great wrongs both at home and abroad; and it is doing so today. But the ideals themselves are not wrong.

A nation where all are equal in human rights and dignity. Where leaders serve the people and not vice versa. Where corruption and oppression are rejected. Where peace and pluralism are celebrated. Where government works to protect our freedoms and promote our welfare. Where law is respected as a check on power.

To strive for this is the essence of what it means to be American. That is our legacy, and our duty, as citizens.

Today is not for pretending that our country is perfect, or is moving in the right direction now. It’s for taking pride in those foundational values that impel us to do better, and on which we refuse to give up.

In 1776 we set ourselves the task of opposing tyranny, injustice and misrule. In 2026 we carry on that task. That’s worthy of celebration.

Happy Independence Day!
